Measuring for Furniture Delivery

Not sure if your furniture will fit through your home for delivery? Here’s our guide to help you measure your furniture and compare it with your home’s dimensions to ensure a hassle-free delivery.

Measure your furniture

  • Width (W): Measure from one side of the sofa to the other.

  • Depth (D): Measure from the back to the front of the sofa.

  • Height (H): Measure from the floor to the top of the sofa.

  • Back Height (BH): Measure from floor to the top of the back frame. Note that some sofa models' legs are removable.

  • Diagonal Depth (DD): Measure from the top left corner to the bottom right corner (excluding pillows).

Measure your space

  • Identify where you intend to place your furniture. Check the width, depth and height of the piece, and make sure it will fit in the space you’ve chosen.

  • Check for electrical outlets, vents or light switches that could be obstructed.

  • Give yourself an extra 1-2 inches of wiggle room when taking measurements.

Measure the path for delivery

Determine the best pathway from outside your home to the room where your furniture will be placed. Measure all entryways the furniture will pass through.

Compare these measurements with your furniture’s dimensions to ensure it can be delivered without issues. For sofas and sectionals, make sure the diagonal depth is smaller than the doorway width to fit properly.

Doorways and Hallways

  • Measure the interior width and height.

  • Check how wide your door can open.

  • If your hallway has angles or turns, measure from the hall corner to the opposite wall to be sure it’s wide enough to pivot.

  • Check for any architectural details that may impede access.

Elevators

  • Door Opening: Measure the width and height of the elevator door.

  • Interior Dimensions: Measure the elevator's interior height, width, and depth.

  • Diagonal Depth Measurement: Measure from the bottom center of the door opening to the back ceiling.

  • Look out for handrails or control panels that may affect the fit or positioning of your delivery.

Stairways

  • Width: Measure the width of the stairway. Take handrails and banisters into account when measuring width.

  • Ceiling Height: Measure from the top and bottom steps to the ceiling.

  • Landings: Measure the width and depth, as well as the ceiling height from that spot.

  • Measure the diagonal from the steps and landing, in case you need to tilt the item to clear the stairway.

Prepare for delivery

Most sofa deliveries qualify for White Glove delivery service, where the delivery team will unpack, fully assemble, and place your item exactly where you want it, taking any packing materials with them when they leave.

There is a standard limit of 2 flights of stairs for the service. If there are more than 2 flights, there is an additional $99 flat rate fee.

What to do before delivery:

  • Clear Paths - Create an entirely clear path, including moving all other furniture, rugs, plants, and other items out of the way.

  • Protect Your Space - Protect your floors and anything else that could be damaged.

  • Put Pets Away - Be sure that your pets are safely contained in another area to ensure they won’t be underfoot or risk escaping through open doors.
